New to the Bryant manufactured family of 1U rack mounting Mains Distribution units, and launched at the SBES in November is the SMS 112P, 12 way Serial Control Mains unit featuring a purpose designed, multipurpose micro controller.
It's basic operation is identical to our proven SMR/SMU mains units in that, to limit the likelihood of monitor stacks, equipment racks etc. causing a line breaker or local fuse to blow, each IEC outlet and kit attached is powered up sequentially. Outputs are individually fused with bi-colour LED status indicators. The LEDs switch from red to green as each output is powered. A blown output fuse will switch the affected LED back to red. All the IEC outlets are 10Amp shuttered units and an integral tie-bar is provided as standard for the output cables. Units can also be 'cascaded' so that more than one unit can be connected to fire or shutdown in sequence.
These new 'SMS' units offer the benefit of serial control, typically for use with a master computer. The serial control is multidrop RS422/485 as used by a lot of Broadcast equipment. This allows set-up changes to such actions as the sequence-on time delays, or the order in which outlets are switched either on or off. Even more usefully, serial control also allows 'real time' control of each outlet and the ability to check 'fuse status' from a central control room automation system.
The Bryant Broadcast units, which have been designed by an experienced Systems Engineer, avoid the use of semiconductor switches; the large amount of 'noise' they introduce to the mains signal and the inability of the zero phase turn on semiconductor switch to reduce peak inrush currents ~ favouring instead relays, which are better suited to this application.
As requested by ISPs and Broadcasters the world over, a mains unit to enable the rebooting of individual items of rack equipment remotely across Ethernet, across continents ~ by the click of a PC mouse using our software or your control system like the BBC's 'BNCS'!
